Redefining Wireless Noise Control
The Bose QuietControl 30 marked Bose’s first wireless in-ear noise-cancelling headphone—positioned as a flagship product that pushed both performance and user experience forward. It introduced a new level of control, allowing users not only to reduce noise but to actively adjust how much of the outside world they let in.
At the core of the project was a fundamental question: how should this device be worn? As a fully wireless system with significant electronic requirements—batteries, processing, and multiple microphones—it demanded a certain physical volume. Early explorations considered different wearable typologies, from pendant-like solutions to various distributed configurations. Ultimately, the neckband emerged as the most balanced approach, offering the capacity needed for all-day performance while maintaining comfort and stability on the body.
Once the neckband direction was established, the design focused on refinement and reduction. Key decisions around cable exits, structural layout, and component distribution were carefully optimized to keep the product visually minimal and physically unobtrusive. The goal was to manage complexity without expressing it—creating a form that feels simple despite what it contains.
Parallel to this, detailed development continued on the earbuds and the inline remote. The earbuds required precise integration of multiple microphones to enable both advanced noise cancellation and ambient awareness features, while still maintaining a compact, ergonomic form. The remote became an extension of the interaction—providing intuitive control over playback and adjustable noise levels in a seamless, tactile way.
