Bose Wave IV

Evolving a Classic

The Bose Wave Music System IV was my first production project after joining Bose—a refresh of an iconic product with a clear goal: elevate its premium feel while preserving the trusted internal architecture. With all core components unchanged, the challenge was purely in form, material, and execution—how to modernize without losing the product’s heritage.

The design focuses on simplification and clarity. I refined the overall form into a cleaner, more resolved geometry, using strong color blocking to define the interface and structure. The introduction of a metal speaker grille became a key moment—both functionally and visually. I developed a new perforation pattern that references the previous generation while leveraging the precision and quality of metal to elevate the overall perception.

Color and finish played a central role in creating a more contemporary expression. The system was offered in bold, contrasting combinations—white paired with a silver grille, and dark silver paired with a black grille—bringing a sharper, more confident presence to the product while maintaining its approachability.

Beyond the final design, this project marked a foundational learning experience. From early concept through to mass production, I gained hands-on understanding of injection molding, part breakdown, and assembly—seeing how design decisions translate into real manufacturing outcomes.

Wave IV represents an early milestone in my career: shaping a familiar product into something more refined, while learning how thoughtful details and material choices can redefine perception.
